Workforce Readiness
The perfect hiring process would be comprised of candidates with the skills and experience necessary for the individual positions, a candidate with the same industry experience or perhaps experience with the company itself, a candidate who has a proven track record of commitment to the job and the company as well as setting and meeting goals.
A proactive plan for recruiting and retention begins with shaping the future workforce. By developing the skills and experience our businesses will require while still in the learning environment (school), students can learn workforce readiness and become better partners in business recruitment.
As a business connects with students while still in school, that business becomes more influential in the future of the workforce. As a business becomes involved in curriculum at any level of education, that business creates a stake in the future workforce. Internships can open up the world of business to the student. They cannot help but influence how the future workforce becomes ready for work.
SHRM-LI Workforce Readiness
There are many ways a business, usually through a human resource professional, can integrate students into the workplace. High school, technical school, college and university systems have students with varying stages of knowledge and experience, who have the need and desire for workplace readiness--they need to find their first (or second) job. The workforce readiness experience should satisfy a student's need to experience the workplace in a real way by gaining valuable on-the-job experience, by getting to the job each and every workday and by meeting a company's need to have a trainable person to handle job tasks that add value to the company. This represents a "win-win" situation for every job candidate and business.
Developing an internship program and looking for intern's falls squarely in the lap of the human resource professional. This is why SHRM-LI has formed a Workforce Readiness Committee dedicated to utilizing our resources, local companies, educational institutions and peers to establish internship programs that work.
SHRM-LI realizes the importance and the growing impact of workforce readiness in all facets of business, industry, community and education. Workforce Readiness includes the preparation of a qualified workforce through the public schools, vocational and technical colleges, adult education opportunities, remedial employee training, and continuing professional development. Such efforts mandate collaboration between business/industry, local, state, and national government, educators, and the local community. Helping to facilitate the successful collaboration of these stakeholders is the focus of the SHRM-LI Workforce Readiness Committee.
