When I began reflecting upon my relationship with Matt Halpern, there were so many things to write about that my initial concern was having enough space even to touch on a few. Tragedy has a way of putting things in perspective, and the loss of our friend made my repeated attempts to write in this space futile.
The passing of our dear friend has been keenly felt by all who knew him. It is much more than his knowledge and wisdom that we will sorely miss. Matt's friendly demeanor and willingness to share his vast insight with others made him a pleasure to be around, not to mention a valuable resource. His sharp mind, tireless work ethic and professionalism were extraordinary by any standard. He worked tirelessly to develop SHRM-LI showing the ability, attention to detail and work ethic that was to mark all of his work. Due in no small part to his efforts, SHRM-LI is among the leading Chapters within the SHRM family.
I have spoken with many people since his passing. Friends and colleagues speak fondly of his good humor, his energy, and his love of life. In good times and bad, and whatever the pressures of newspaper deadlines, he could always be relied upon for his composure, courtesy and honesty. Many people have paid tribute to his natural gentlemanly nature that was always kind and generous.
As we plow through the hustle and bustle of our days, we're reminded how precarious life is and how vital it is to appreciate the friends, and family and loved ones we have. Sadly, it sometimes takes the death of a friend to remind us about what's most important in life.
We will miss Matt for his warmth, his wit, his intelligence, and his commitment to the community we call humanity.
