17th Annual Conference & EXPO
April 11, 2008
Crest Hollow Country Club, Woodbury, NY
7:30 AM – 4:30 PM
The Conference theme of “HR: Staying in Tune with Diversity” reflects the many aspects of diversity within the workplace. Within a diverse workforce as regards age, ethnicity, religion or sex, and when striving toward such a workforce, there are numerous issues that may arise. The workshop topics at the Conference will address how we view these differences and how we can strive to make them disappear as we undertake our role as HR professionals “to stay in tune.”

WORKSHOP PRESENTERS
(a) Adwoa Buahene, n-gen People Performance Inc.,
Linking Generational Diversity to Engagement and Bottom-Line Performance
The four generations (Traditionalist, Baby Boomer, Gen X and Gen Y) demonstrate different behaviors and expectations in the workplace. In order to fully engage each cohort, organizations have to acknowledge the differences, and respond by demonstrating organizational engagement. Generational differences are highlighted and how cohort behaviors and expectations impact the ability to get, keep and grow all four generations will be discussed. Demonstrating organizational engagement (transparent, responsive, partnering) allows organizations to build and execute win-win strategies for all four generations.
(b) Steve Robbins, Ph.D.
Unintentional Intolerance
Research and experience tell us that we all have biases that we are often unaware of, or think little about. Yet, these biases guide our decision-making behaviors and attributions on a daily basis. Could we be making “bad” decisions and engaging in exclusive behavior without knowing? The answer is “Yes.” Dr. Robbins explores the “hows” and “whys” surrounding unintentional intolerance in this eye-opening presentation.

The Ten Lenses – Your Guide to Living and Working in a Multicultural World
The Ten Lenses are 10 patterns of thought and behavior that people have with respect to race, ethnicity, nationality and culture. This workshop helps people to learn about their own individual preferences for the 10 lenses and to better understand the lenses that others use. The goal is to have individuals contribute toward creating an “11th lens” organization – a culture that nourishes the diverse employees and serves the firm’s multicultural customers.

“Who Wants Plaintiff To Be A Millionaire?” Avoiding Liability Through Lawful Pathways to Diversity
Can you set hard and fast diversity goals for your workplace? Can you instruct your recruiters to bring you only minority or female candidates or pay them a premium for doing so? Can you structure your job advertisements to specify a preference for minorities or females? Can you pay your managers for achieving goals? What do you do when a customer says they only want to deal with someone of a particular background? What is lawful and unlawful and what are some of the best practices out there? Explore these and other cutting edge issues in the excitement of a game show environment where contestants test their knowledge to prevent Plaintiff from becoming a millionaire. Hosted by Matt “Regis” Halpern, a senior partner at employment law firm Jackson Lewis LLP, who will help us learn how to set up lawful, effective and operationally practical diversity programs and answer “no one” to the question “Who Wants Plaintiff To Be A Millionaire?”
